Just to pass on some info its not supposed to be a sequel to kubrick the shining although some scenes might pay respect to kubrick and his version but this movie is an adoption of a Stephen king book of the same name which is a continuation of stephen kings version of the shining the made for tv mini series but with that said this movie could stand on its own without having seen either version. Right now the director mike Flanagan is on a roll easily my favorite horror/thriller/supernatural director not saying he is the best of all time but he has a unique style thats working for him
U know its good work when u know its him without seeing the credits first

I really liked this. I thought the novel translated very well to the screen. The acting was good as were the effects. It was nice to revisit Danny Torrance after all these years. Great ending [SPOILER] This is one of the good Stephen King transitions from book to movie and if you are a fan then I definitely recommend watching.

Fantastic movie!! Loads of originality and an awesome story. I didn't know anything about this movie other than seeing the title and artwork somewhere a while back and when I was started watching this it looked and felt like an action hero type of movie so that's what I thought it was. I had gotten through a huge chunk of it before I realized it wasn't and only because doctor sleep kept mentioning that as a child he called his ability "the shining". 🤦🤷 the acting was great. The whole cast was awesome. I really loved this movie visually as well. Everything from the set/set design to the makeup and CGI was top notch looked fantastic. This is a movie that I definitely recommend. This is a great movie as a stand alone for those who never seen "the Shining" and don't plan to.

Ter-ri-blah
This exemplifies everything about a horribly bad spin-off and that's all this movie is. You shouldn't be allowed to take a mediocre idea and pull from legendary material to the point where you are literally recreating countless scenes from said legendary material to complete a movie. This feature was unimaginative and way too long. I fell asleep 3 times trying to get through this only to be completely let down. The only good thing I can say about the ending is that it was over. I don't know why this didn't pull more from the t.v. version instead. This would have been more complimentary since they were both underwhelming at best. A big fat waste of time. Not scary (even though they where pulling from 1982 "The Shining" big style.) in the least and these vape villains where the epitome of lame. The hat lady was a joke and she talked too much. I hated, hated, hated, hated, hated it. I can't stress this enough. Will never watch this again and will never talk to anyone about it again. Save yourself 2.5 hrs and ignore this.

Tried very hard to have a personality of its own but it absolutely failed for me. The
acting mediocre at best, all these tourist 'Shining' references and King's obsessions do not help at all. Film got absolutely no personality on its own and it just get so utterly boring. Especially that 'Rose the hat' idea was borderline ridiculous. Boringly disappointing and nothing to do with Kubrick's vision. Just another bland King adaptation.

@ElectricAngel69 I'm with you on the piñata. A blatant lack of respect for cinema.

Well done & not a letdown at all! Even though I enjoyed the ending in the novel better, this was still a great watch:)

I really enjoyed this. I'm so glad someone finally figured out how good of a movie can be made by following sai kings source material as closely as possible. The actors in this did a very good job. Everyone played their roles very well.

Kubrick was timeless, while Doctor Sleep tried to stand up to the Original Films dark legacy, as a sequel it ended up with an ending that was virtually identical to King's mini series remake from 1997. Just a slight change in scenario and characters at the end. (And yes, I know the whole soul eater zombie thing from the ghosts of Christmas past was not there, I am talking about what came afterwards in the boiler room)
Too much Stephen King. Not Enough Stanley Kubrick.
The FILM suffers from a bad ending, a remake of a Simi happy bad ending.
Kubrick is rolling in his grave. Such Butchery, the ending needed Kubrick, since it was a sequel to his film. And it comes up short at the end of it all.

@Lovecraftian Doctor Sleep is based on the 2013 horror novel of the same name by Stephen King. The novel is a sequel to King's 1977 novel The Shining. The 1977 novel was adapted into a 1980 horror film of the same name by director Stanley Kubrick. King is notably critical of Kubrick's film adaptation and its differences to his original novel. After its release, King wrote and executive-produced a new adaptation with the 1997 television miniseries.[14]

While the film Doctor Sleep is intended to be a direct adaptation of the 2013 sequel novel, director Mike Flanagan said Doctor Sleep would still "acknowledge Kubrick's The Shining in some way

This was awesome! I wasn’t sure how it would be with Stephen Kings animosity towards the first Shining film (and the hit or miss nature of SK film adaptions in general) But have to say I really like the way they paid homage to both the books and the film and blended the storyline. All the actors were good in their roles too.

Wow! Really amazing movie. I loved everything about it. The actors were perfect in the roles especially Ewan McGregor. I love the look and feel they brought in from the shining. Alex essoe looked so much like Shelly and if you closed your eyes she had her voice down pat. I liked that he used Bruce greenwood and carel struycken from Gerald's game. Great great amazing movie!

💯% Teeny approved 💋 👍👏🤘

I have waited for years for this movie!!!
A few years ago I challenged myself to see how many books I could read in a year. While still working full time, raising my children, and I even painted my house that summer.
Long story short, all my free time I read. At the beach, my breaks at work, every free moment I read.
I ended with the year at a 43 book count. Which I'm still proud of!
Barnes and Noble is closest to me and of course I have a gold card because of how many books I buy through them.
Between King, Koontz, Barker, Tolkien, and Grisham I filled the year.
Some of those books were titles I've read before, but didn't own.
The ones that still speak to me are the Dark Tower series, Odd Thomas series, The Door to December, The Talisman (and Black House), and the Danny Torrence saga.
If I said that as much as I love Nicholson in the original, the remake was amazing as well, it would be understated both ways.
Once I lived in Colorado and made it a point to see the "Overlook", really the Stanley Hotel. I love this genre if you couldn't tell already ha ha

Great movie and a truly good attempt to live up to the first film... but somehow it just misses that finesse. Mind you they didn’t have Kubrick for this one so 8/10

I am a huge Stephen King fan and The Shining is one of my favorite movies. I was concerned this film would not live up to the original. However, the movie builds the characters so you are invested in them, even despising some. It is a darker film than the first. The acting was very good and the story tied in with The Shining perfectly for me. Overall, I really enjoyed it and will watch it along with The Shining many more times.
